Jesus commended Peter, stating that his confession of faith was based upon what the Father Himself had revealed – Mt 16:17. Jesus then used this opportunity to speak of His church – Mt 16:18-19. He promised to build His church. He mentioned the foundation upon which it would be built.. Sermon Matthew 16:13-20 The Keys to the Kingdom. By Dr. Philip W. McLarty. I hope you’re enjoying this little mini-series on the kingdom of God. If this is your first time here since we started, so far we’ve heard about the “Spirit of the Kingdom” (which is God’s unconditional love) and the “Boundaries of the Kingdom” (which are limitless).

Matthew 16:18 is a divine promise. Acts 2 records the birth of the church as we know it on the Day of Pentecost, after the crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension of the Lord Jesus. When Jesus spoke promised to build the church, the church was not formally in existence. Yet its sovereign construction was fully assured.. The translation we have in Matthew 16:13-20 says it was “Caesarea Philippi,” but literally in the Greek it is “Caesarea of Philip.”. That distinguished it from the older city of Caesarea, which was south and west of there a ways along the Mediterranean Sea. But it also pointed to the more immediate history of the place.
